Protecting Yourself Against Untrue Ideas
In an age where there are hundreds of religions, and even thousands of branches within those religions, it is often hard to know what to think. There are people constantly trying to win others over to there side, so it is important to know how to defend ones faith.
Before someone can inoculate themselves against other false teachings, they need to be able to deal with their own doubt. It is completely normal for a Christian to have doubts, therefore it is important to know how to deal with it. The first response to doubt should be to pray, and ask God about what they are questioning. If doubt still persists, one should turn to the Bible. God provided believers with the Bible, and in it he gave us the answers to almost all of our questions. Even if there isn’t a direct answer, the Bible contains stories of people with the same questions that modern believers have, and how they dealt with their doubts. It’s also important to speak with church leaders or other believers, and discuss everyone’s ideas and questions.
Being able to deal with doubt is important when dealing with false teachings and other religions. If someone can deal with false ideas that creep into their mind, they can deal with false ideas that get spoken to them. Jesus himself said,
“Anyone who wants to do the will of God with know whether my teaching is from God or is merely my own.”
This can be applied to any teaching. If one follows God’s will, and knows the Bible, they can determine if a speaker’s words come from God, or from themselves. In the end, the most important thing is to know the scriptures and study them for yourself. When other teachings are presented, you can weigh them against scripture.
